| Saint Anthony, Idaho: Saint Anthony Dunes |
|
Directions: From Route 20 take the North Rexburg Exit. Go North on Red Road. The dunes can be reached via Red Road. Sand Hills resort is about 14 miles or so from Route 20 off Red Road. The Sand Hills Resort is about 5 miles from the big popular dunes so it's kind of out of the way if you want to ride the bigger dunes. Also, it is pretty crowded there and you can get packed in pretty tight but it does have grass and trees. Also, you need to reserve very far in advance and if you cancel less than a week in advance they will not refund you. Holidays require a 3 night minimum stay. The prices have gone up A LOT since the place came under new management early in 2005 or so. A Small tent sized spot starts at $24 per night and a full hook-up spot goes up to $39 per night!!! "Holiday rates may vary" according to their website - I doubt the prices get lower during the holidays. This is NOT where I recommend you stay of you want to ride the good dunes. Go to Desert Oasis or BLM area for that (See Below). SandHills resorts claims there is no other camping sites like it in the area but that is misleading as Desert Oasis is very close by with better dune access. A better alternative in my opinion if you need hook-ups is Desert Oasis Campground (208) 624-3275. The owners are very nice and friendly and they are steadily improving their facility. They have dry camping at $12 per night and full hook-ups at $25 per night. The campground is located close to the point where the smaller dunes and the larger dunes meet so it is well situated in my opinion. To get there turn at the red flashing light on Red road and look for the campground entrance. It is before the BLM area so if you get to the BLM/Egin Lakes entrance you have gone too far. There is BLM campground near Egan lakes but they have no hook-ups, grass trees or shade but are close to the big dunes. The camping and parking areas are very large and there are plenty of restrooms. The BLM campground can be reached by going about 8 miles on Red Road and turning left at the flashing red light. There is a BLM brown sign that says "Egin Lakes Access" there. I believe there is a day use fee now and the area for camping is fairly large. First come first serve.. Altitude is 5000 Feet. Don't like my map? Click here for the TopoZone map. |
