Frequently Asked Questions

Usage

What is the purpose of the WordPress Photo Directory?

The WordPress Photo Directory provides free, high-quality, CC0-licensed, community-submitted photographs suitable for use within WordPress sites and elsewhere.

Can I use photos from this site in commercial projects?

Yes! The intent of the WP Photo Directory is to have a high quality collection of CC0 licensed photos, which can be used for any purpose, personal or commercial, without the need for permission, attribution, or payment. All submissions are moderated prior to appearing on the site. The WP Photo Directory is moderated by a team of volunteers, and while we do our absolute best to ensure original and quality content, we may not catch everything! We recommend that you verify that the work is actually under the CC0 license by doing a quick online search. If you are in doubt, please let us know by emailing [email protected].

Do I need to credit the photographer when using photos?

No. The photos are licensed as CC0, which means they can be used without attribution. Credit would be appreciated, and is recommended as a best practice, but not necessary. However, you cannot claim ownership or authorship of the photo. The copyright remains with the original photographer or rights holder.

Contributing

How many photos can I submit at one time?

At this time, contributors can submit up to five photos at a time in the moderation queue. Once your photos are approved, you can submit more!

Will I be notified if my photo was approved or declined?

Yes. You will receive an email to confirm in both cases. If your photo is declined, the email will explain the reason.

How long will it take for my submission to get reviewed?

All submissions are moderated prior to appearing on the site. Moderation is performed by a team of volunteers, so it may take as long as 24-36 hours before a photo is approved or declined. Please be patient.

Why was my photo declined?

When a photo is declined, an email will be sent to you to let you know why. Chances are, the photo didn’t meet one or more of our guidelines and/or our admittedly subjective assessment of quality.
